Hair Oils : What is Oil Rinsing & Reasons It’s So Good for curly Hair

When it comes to natural oils, they go well hand in hand with naturally curly hair and for a pretty good reason. If you really want your mane to be tangle-free, soft, smooth, and shiny, then oils are the solution you are looking for. Locking the moisture in is surprisingly not the only job that oils do and actually, they don’t even have to be the last part of your styling routine. There might be a chance that having curly hair you might have heard about the good ol’ oil rinsing method or you might have not. Well, either way, oils are quite wonderful for your strands used yet or not.

So what is oil rinsing?

Oil rinsing is the use of oil in your washing routine to help with moisture retention and the removal of knots and tangles. There are claims that once you replace your shampoo with the infamous “oil cleaning method” you may actually agree that the oil is a much better choice. Some people prefer oil rinsing the hair after it has been cleansed to fight the dryness that leads after shampooing and also to strengthen the conditioning effects of the conditioner. One way or the other, this regime always has a positive impact on your hair. Search for “Online curly hair care products” to get products specially curated for curly hair to make this regime long-lasting.

How to oil rinse?

Essentially, you are slathering a carrier oil (must be in liquid form and remain liquid when hot or cold) over your tresses in the same way that you would with your conditioner. Make sure it's 100% natural, which you can usually get in the grocery store's food aisle as it will be cheaper there than the beauty aisle. Massage it from the roots to the tips to ensure the oil covers all of your strands and finger through or use a broad tooth comb to get it all the way through.

Here is a list of some great oils for rinsing purposes:

  • Argan

  • Castor

  • Olive

  • Almond

  • Jojoba

It is always completely the user’s preference on which oil they wish to try to use as they know their hair better. You may also attempt this procedure if you are a shampooer or a co-washer. Allow the oil to remain on your head (with or without a plastic cover) for at least 5 minutes before softly washing. If you applied the oil after your conditioner and want to close your hair cuticle, use cold water; otherwise, use warm water if you intend to continue with your conditioner after you rinse it all out.

How to oil rinse

  • If you want to shampoo your hair before the oil rinse, it may be an option. If your hair is clean you can jump straight to the next step.

  • It is an important step that you use warm water to rinse your hair and open your hair cuticles. There are several curly hair products such as the steam cap that can help in opening the cuticles before the wash.

  • Take your favorite natural oil and start applying it from the roots to the tip leaving it on for a few minutes. If you have the time and the luxury you can use the mixture of these natural oils. Now is the time to relax and give yourself a great scalp massage. This helps the oils to get deep inside your hair and scalp.

  • Once again, use warm water and rinse it all out.

  • Use a deep conditioner or a hair mask. This process will give you extra hydration. Some people, rather than using the oil directly, use a conditioner or a mask in which the oil is already added.

  • This time, rinse with cold water in order to close your cuticles up.

  • Go for a serum or leave-in-conditioner to lock in oil the moisture and to have beautiful bouncy locks.
